THE ORIGINS OF THE MILITARY POPULATION OF SAN CARLOS AND THE BATTALION QUARTERS.

Jorge Juan and Santacilla

The lack of protection of the coasts and maritime cities during the War of Succession became evident after the attacks on the Bay of Cádiz (1702 and 1703), by the Anglo-Dutch squadron. This was more than enough reason for the strengthening of the defenses of Cádiz and the strengthening of the Isla de León to be considered urgently necessary to avoid this type of contingency.

Battalion Barracks

A commission was established, headed by Francisco de Sabatini, leaving the direction of the works in charge of Vicente Ignacio Imperial Digueri in 1779. The initial project constituted a monumental complex, which, among other buildings of various kinds, included two barracks for the troops . The grandeur of this project was soon reduced in the times of Carlos III, and it was already under the reign of Carlos IV that Sabatini's initial idea was abandoned, being replaced by the new planning of the Marquis of Ureña, due to the precarious situation of the Royal Treasury.
